The Witch's Hat
If you don't mind permanently intense cold, ferocious winds that find you hanging on to your tripod for dear life, spindrift that burgeons without warning into sudden whiteouts.....and living life under countless layers of clothes, then Iceland in the depths of winter really is the place to be.
For anyone who hasn't had that sheer good fortune it is pretty impossible to describe without falling into the usual traps of hype and cliche. If those are to be avoided then what's left?
Even for the seasoned traveller this country is simply different. It has a raw and profound beauty that is intense in its ability to render anyone both silent and motionless.....despite the very real chance of being frozen to the spot. For me, its landscape possesses a dreamlike quality, and an other-worldly departure from reality.

I have never seen anything like it, either before or since.
