Isle of Skye Collection

We often had touring holidays in Scotland when I was a child, and I guess that was when I grew to love the wild and rugged landscape of the country...most especially the Western Highlands and Islands.
I must have been around nine or ten when I visited the Isle of Skye for the first time. In those days there was no bridge, so you had to take the MV Glenachulish ferry from Glenelg to Kylerhea. The ferry still operates in the summer months, and is the last manually-operated turntable ferry in the world.

That first occasion was just for one day, but it made a lasting impression on me, despite no doubt having a somewhat junior view of the world at the time. It was many years later before I returned and was then able to spend a whole fortnight exploring and absorbing the remarkable landscape of this Inner Hebridean island. I made a promise to myself that one day I would go back.

In June, 2021, that promise became a reality, and in fact it was the first trip I made once Covid restrictions were lifted. This time it was with trusty camera in hand, so that I was able to capture some of the many extraordinary scenes that greet the traveller at every turn.

The Isle of Skye is the largest and most northerly island of the Inner Hebrides. It is almost fifty miles long and its coastline is deeply indented by sea lochs, resulting in many peninsulas. Some of the most spectacular scenery and varied geology of the British Isles is concentrated in this one place. Rolling plateaus give way to the stark and formidable heights of the Black Cuillin. The remains of ancient lava flows exist as outcrops in the north of the island, and there are sedimentary rocks found in the south. There are areas rich in fossils, and landslip features abound at the Storr and the Quiraing. The island is a haven for walkers, climbers, photographers...and those of us who merely wish to feed the soul.

I would return in a heartbeat.
